First published in 1864, Sheridan Le Fanu’s Uncle Silas is a masterful Victorian Gothic novel of inheritance, secrecy and domestic menace. Maud Ruthyn, a young heiress raised under the watchful guidance of her unconventional father, finds her future uncertain after his death, when she is sent to live with her mysterious uncle Silas at the decaying estate of Bartram-Haugh. Surrounded by unfamiliar servants, unsettling relations and an atmosphere of carefully concealed hostility, Maud must learn to distinguish genuine affection from manipulation.

Le Fanu builds suspense through Maud’s limited perspective, allowing ordinary household encounters to acquire an increasingly sinister significance. Questions of female independence, religious hypocrisy, financial power and the vulnerability of women within patriarchal society give the novel a psychological depth beyond its Gothic trappings. Its claustrophobic setting and gradual revelation of hidden motives place it among the most accomplished sensation and Gothic fiction of the nineteenth century. For readers drawn to decaying country houses, family secrets and slow-burning dread, Uncle Silas offers an especially rich example of Le Fanu’s art.
