First published in 2003, Margaret Atwood’s Oryx and Crake imagines a near future in which genetic engineering, corporate power and ecological destruction have transformed the world beyond recognition. Its solitary survivor, Jimmy, now known as Snowman, inhabits a devastated landscape populated by hybrid creatures and the genetically engineered Children of Crake. As he struggles to survive, memories of his childhood, his brilliant friend Crake and the enigmatic Oryx gradually reveal the chain of ambition, exploitation and catastrophe that brought civilisation to its end.

Part dystopian novel, part speculative fable, the book questions what happens when scientific ingenuity outruns ethical responsibility. Atwood turns the promises of biotechnology, consumer culture and technological progress into unsettling possibilities, while exploring loneliness, human desire and the fragile boundaries between the natural and the manufactured. The opening volume of the MaddAddam trilogy, Oryx and Crake extends the environmental and political concerns of The Handmaid’s Tale into a darker, more technologically driven future.
