First published in 1934, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Tender Is the Night unfolds beneath the brilliant Mediterranean sun, where the American expatriate set gathers along the French Riviera. At its centre are Dick Diver, a gifted psychiatrist, and his wife Nicole, a wealthy woman whose fragile mental health has shaped their marriage, drawing together love, money, ambition and dependence. Their carefully cultivated world of beaches, hotels and elegant parties seems almost impervious to consequence, yet beneath its polish lie tensions that neither charm nor privilege can indefinitely contain.

Among Fitzgerald’s most searching works, the novel explores the erosion of talent, the seductions of wealth and the painful instability of identity. Its fractured chronology gradually reveals the cost of Dick’s devotion to Nicole and the emotional compromises underpinning their life together. Written in the aftermath of the Jazz Age and against the shadow of the First World War, it is both a portrait of a damaged generation and an intimate study of a man’s decline. More sombre and formally adventurous than The Great Gatsby, it remains one of Fitzgerald’s most complex meditations on the price of glamour.
