First published in 1897, Bram Stoker’s Dracula begins with the young English solicitor Jonathan Harker travelling to a remote castle in Transylvania to assist a mysterious nobleman with a property purchase. His unsettling experiences there set in motion a struggle that carries the ancient terrors of Eastern European folklore into the heart of Victorian England. Told through diaries, letters, telegrams and newspaper extracts, the novel follows Harker, his fiancée Mina Murray, the endangered Lucy Westenra and the enigmatic Professor Van Helsing as they confront Count Dracula, a figure whose supernatural power threatens both individual lives and the social order. Stoker builds his horror through accumulating fragments of evidence, making the reader a participant in the gradual unravelling of an inexplicable mystery.

More than a Gothic tale of vampires and pursuit, Dracula explores the anxieties of an age unsettled by scientific change, shifting sexual conventions and fears of invasion from beyond its borders. Its combination of documentary realism, supernatural dread and psychological tension helped establish the modern vampire novel, while its central figure has become one of the most enduring creations in popular literature. Stoker’s work continues to invite interpretations that reach beyond its terror, revealing a world in which desire, faith, technology and reason struggle to contain what lies outside their boundaries.

On Dracula
