First published in 1937, Agatha Christie’s Death on the Nile follows Hercule Poirot on a journey through Egypt, where a luxurious river cruise becomes the setting for a murder. The victim is Linnet Ridgeway Doyle, a wealthy and admired heiress whose marriage to Simon Doyle has brought her into conflict with his former fiancée, Jacqueline de Bellefort, who follows the newlyweds aboard the steamer Karnak. When Linnet is found dead, Poirot must untangle a web of jealousy, concealed motives and carefully guarded secrets among the passengers, each of whom may have a reason to wish her harm. Inspired by Christie’s own travels in Egypt, the novel brings the grandeur of the Nile and its ancient monuments into striking contrast with the intimate tensions of a closed-circle mystery.

Among Christie’s most accomplished Poirot novels, Death on the Nile combines an intricately constructed puzzle with a keen understanding of love, resentment, money and the destructive force of envy. Its sunlit landscapes and elegant social world conceal a mounting sense of danger, while Poirot’s attention to human psychology proves as important as any physical clue. Both an atmospheric travel mystery and a study of passion turned poisonous, the novel remains a defining example of Golden Age detective fiction.

From the book

“Pardon me if I have been impertinent, but the psychology, it is the most important fact in a case.”

— Agatha Christie, Death on the Nile

On Death on the Nile

“Hercule Poirot, as usual, digs out a truth so unforeseen that it would be unfair for a reviewer to hint at it.”

— The Times Literary Supplement, 1937
