First published in 1851, Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick follows Ishmael, a sailor who joins the whaling ship Pequod under the command of Captain Ahab. Ahab’s pursuit of the great white whale that maimed him becomes an all-consuming quest, drawing the diverse crew towards a confrontation with the limits of human will and understanding.

Part sea adventure, part philosophical meditation, the novel moves between detailed accounts of whaling, dramatic encounters and expansive reflections on fate, nature, knowledge and obsession. Its restless mixture of genres and voices initially perplexed many readers, but it later came to be recognised as a defining work of American literature. Melville’s oceanic vision makes the whale both a living creature and an inexhaustible mystery, resisting any single interpretation.
