First published in 1981, Gabriel García Márquez’s Chronicle of a Death Foretold begins with a murder everyone seems to know is coming. In a small Colombian town, Santiago Nasar is killed by the Vicario twins, who claim they must restore their family’s honour after their sister Ángela is returned to her husband on her wedding night. Told retrospectively by an unnamed narrator revisiting the events years later, the novel reconstructs the final hours before the killing through conflicting memories, rumours and testimonies, revealing a community in which knowledge does not necessarily lead to action.

Blending the precision of investigative journalism with the unsettling inevitability of Greek tragedy, García Márquez explores honour, collective responsibility, fate and the fragile boundary between truth and recollection. The town itself becomes a central character, its inhabitants bound together by custom, silence and a shared failure to prevent the violence. More restrained in its use of the marvellous than One Hundred Years of Solitude, the novel nevertheless displays the Colombian Nobel laureate’s gift for making the extraordinary feel inseparable from everyday life. The result is a haunting meditation on how a death can become both a public spectacle and a private moral burden.
