Contemporary Narrative History, Classical Reception, Cultural and Religious History

Tom Holland is a British historian, author, and broadcaster whose vivid narrative histories have brought the political struggles, religious transformations, and intellectual inheritance of the ancient and medieval worlds to a broad international readership. Born in Oxford and educated at Cambridge, he began his literary career writing Gothic and historical fiction before turning to the study of antiquity and the civilizations that shaped the Western world. His historical writing combines extensive engagement with ancient sources, a novelist's sensitivity to character and dramatic tension, and an abiding interest in the relationship between religion, political authority, and cultural identity. Particularly drawn to periods of profound historical transformation, Holland examines how societies understand their own values and how beliefs established centuries ago continue to shape modern assumptions. His work moves confidently between military history, political biography, and the history of ideas.

His breakthrough history, *Rubicon: The Last Years of the Roman Republic* (2003), reconstructed the political rivalries and civil wars that brought the Roman Republic to an end. *Persian Fire* (2005) explored the conflict between the Greek city-states and the Persian Empire, while *Millennium* (2008) examined the transformations of medieval Europe around the year 1000. In *Dominion* (2019), Holland traced the enduring influence of Christianity upon Western moral and intellectual traditions. His later work, *Pax: War and Peace in Rome's Golden Age* (2023), returned to the Roman imperial world. Alongside his books, Holland co-hosts the popular history podcast *The Rest Is History* with Dominic Sandbrook. His scholarship and storytelling have established him as an influential contemporary interpreter of the historical forces that shaped European civilization.
