Contemporary Christian Theology, Christian Apologetics, Science and Religion
Alister McGrath is one of the leading contemporary Christian theologians and intellectual historians, celebrated for his thoughtful exploration of the relationship between science, faith, and the human search for meaning. Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, he grew up in Downpatrick before studying chemistry at the University of Oxford, where he completed a doctorate in molecular biophysics. Initially drawn to atheism and the explanatory power of the natural sciences, he gradually embraced Christianity, a transformation that would shape his intellectual life. Turning from scientific research to theology, McGrath developed a distinguished academic career at Oxford and King's College London, becoming known for his ability to bridge the worlds of scientific inquiry, religious philosophy, and literary imagination.
His extensive writings explore Christian doctrine, the Protestant Reformation, natural theology, and the intellectual challenges posed by modern atheism. Works including Christian Theology: An Introduction, The Twilight of Atheism, The Dawkins Delusion?, and A Fine-Tuned Universe examine the relationship between reason, belief, and scientific understanding. A particular fascination with C. S. Lewis inspired his acclaimed biography C. S. Lewis: A Life and further studies of the writer's philosophical and imaginative world. McGrath served as Oxford's Andreas Idreos Professor of Science and Religion until his retirement in 2022 and remains an emeritus professor. His scholarship continues to contribute to contemporary discussions of faith, science, literature, and the enduring questions of human existence.
